Gaia by Luke Jerram at 22 Bishopsgate

Now on display at 22 Bishopsgate, Gaia is a spectacular inflatable sculpture by acclaimed UK artist Luke Jerram. Measuring 7 metres (23 ft) in diameter, this detailed replica of Earth is created using high-resolution NASA satellite imagery and named after the Greek goddess Gaia, the personification of the Earth.

Internally lit and suspended, Gaia creates the impression of a glowing, floating planet—inviting viewers to see Earth from a new perspective. When viewed from 211 metres away, the sculpture appears the same size as Earth seen from the Moon.

Constructed by Cameron Balloons using 50 printed panels, the installation displays the Earth’s surface at a scale of 1:1.8 million. The experience is often described as moving and meditative, with many visitors reporting a profound sense of connection to the planet—a phenomenon similar to the “overview effect” felt by astronauts.

Gaia debuted at the Bluedot Festival in 2018 and has since toured internationally, including a notable appearance at the COP26 climate summit in Glasgow.

Following the success of his earlier Museum of the Moon, Luke Jerram’s Gaia blends art, science, and environmental awareness in a powerful visual journey.

Visit 22 Bishopsgate to witness this extraordinary artwork and rediscover the wonder of our world. Free to visit 7am-7pm until 26 July. Open to all.
