Eastern City Green Space Walking Tour

This walk begins at Tower Hill Gardens, a peaceful green space nestled between the Tower of London and a remarkably well-preserved section of the Roman Wall. Here, you can enjoy a quiet moment among trees and benches while soaking in a glimpse of London’s ancient past.
From Tower Hill Gardens, a short stroll brings you to Trinity Square Gardens—a formal garden steeped in maritime history and memorial significance. Overlooking the Tower of London, it is home to the Merchant Navy Memorial, which honors seamen lost during both World Wars. The garden also marks the historic site of the Tower Hill scaffold, where many notable figures met their fate.
The route continues to Seething Lane Garden, a hidden oasis in the heart of the City. This tranquil space pays tribute to Samuel Pepys, the famed 17th-century diarist who once lived nearby.
Next, you’ll explore St Dunstan in the East, a stunning church ruin repurposed as a public garden after being heavily damaged in World War II. The combination of gothic stonework and lush greenery makes it one of London’s most atmospheric spots.
Winding through the eastern side of the city, this walk weaves together layers of history, quiet green corners, and powerful memorials—right in the heart of London. The journey concludes at George’s Yard.
About the guide:
Rebecca Couper is a qualified City of London Guide passionate about sharing the City’s hidden side with a broader audience. She is a former BBC producer, and uses her communication skills to good use to reveal a different view of a city that has a tapestry woven with threads both golden and dark.
She will weave together the city’s story, tracing its journey from Roman foundations through the aftermath of the Great Fire of London, which reshaped the city’s streets and architecture, to the scars left by the Second World War’s relentless bombing raids that marked so many of London’s historic buildings. In doing so, she will illuminate the enduring importance of safeguarding our precious green spaces for future generations.
