Merry Christmas from the Eastern City

2024 Highlights

As the festive season approaches, we want to take this opportunity to express our thanks to each of you for your continued support throughout the year.

Together, we have made remarkable progress in making Eastern City an even better place to live, work and visit.

Some of our 2024 highlights:

  • 80% of the commitments made in our 2022-27 BID Proposal are either complete or underway.
  • 64 applications received for our grants programme with £40,000 given to a variety of local charity projects.
  • 9,095 hours of additional street cleaning delivered.
  • Over 35,000 visitors to the Elysian Arcs art installation in February and March.
  • Development and launch of our Public Realm Vision – the culmination of 9 months’ research, consultation and refinement of proposals to ambitiously enhance our streetscape. Work is now underway on bringing those ideas to life.
  • Freight, Servicing and Delivery Study completed – detailed research and recommendations as to how the Eastern City, occupiers, property owners, building managers, the logistics sector and Corporation can collaboratively work to make local supply chains more efficient, cost effective and environmentally sustainable. Work has now started on implementing those recommendations.
  • Launched a new ‘Eastern City’ brand and website for both the BID and the area as a destination, creating a new identity which emphasises our community as a positive driver of change.
  • We have employed our own, dedicated gardener for the BID area – a first in the City which will help deliver our plans for more urban greening.
  • We have funded the taxi marshalling service at Liverpool Street Station which has safely facilitated onward journeys for almost 30,000 people.
  • 2,620 visitors to our ‘Screen on The Green’ at Seething Lane Garden as part of our Summer of Sport programme. 82% said it improved their perception of the area and, overall, summer visitors to the BID footprint were up 19% on the previous year.
  • Our highly successful meanwhile use activation at 56 Old Broad Street – ‘Broadworks’ – has been extended by at least a further 6 months, and a similar scheme providing affordable work and exhibition space for the creative sector is underway at 35 Crutched Friars.
  • 149 people were treated by our cycle medic service over the festive period, potentially saving 67 ambulance call-outs.
  • Our Street Ambassador team have welcomed 56,950 visitors to the area and made 8,526 environmental/cleansing issue reports to the City of London Corporation for rectification.
  • Installed London’s tallest Christmas tree at Bishopsgate Plaza and celebrated the switch-on event with a special appearance from Dame Joan Collins.
