Sculpture in the City’s Sculpting Perspectives: Mind The Gap

Sculpture in the City’s Sculpting Perspectives: Mind The Gap

With Sculpture in the City’s Artistic Director & Lacuna’s Director Stella Ioannou, Eastern City’s CEO Kate Hart and Young Women’s Trust CEO Claire Reindorp.

Young women face inequality from the very start of their working lives. On average, a young woman will earn a fifth less each year than a young man of the same age. For some groups of young women, such as those from racially minoritised communities, the income gap is even larger.

In partnership with Young Women’s Trust join a long table discussion where we explore how we tackle sexism, misogyny and the gender pay gap within the creative and corporate industries. Bring your questions and share your experiences.

A Lois Weaver Long Table format is a dinner party structured by etiquette, where conversation is the only course.

There will also be donations welcomed for Young Women’s Trust who support young people with free coaching, feedback on job applications and information to help them get where they want to be.

The Long Table is a format for discussion that uses the setting of a domestic dinner table as a means to generate public conversation. Conceived in 2003 by Lois Weaver in response to the divided nature of conventional panel discussions, the Long Table allows voices to be heard equally, disrupting hierarchical notions of ‘expertise.’ It was inspired by Maureen Gorris’s film Antonia’s Line, the central image of which is a dinner table getting longer and longer to accommodate a growing family of outsiders, eccentrics and friends – until finally it has to be moved outside. Since then, the Table has been set at institutions and festivals worldwide and invited hundreds of people to sit and share their views on myriad topics. The Long Table is an opensource format; anyone is welcome to use it as a means of generating discussion on any subject you choose.

Sculpture in the City

Sculpture in the City is an annual sculpture park that uses the urban realm as a rotating gallery space. Explore the 17 artworks animating the Square Mile in this year’s edition.

Every summer, the City of London, in partnership with local businesses, unveils a brand-new selection of artworks by internationally-acclaimed and emerging artists. Set amongst the iconic architecture of the City’s insurance district, the sculptures animate public spaces and engage visitors and passers-by alike.

Celebrating its 13th Edition from 24 July 2024 – Spring 2025, Sculpture in the City has shown 162 artworks by 137 artists to date.

Sculpture in the City is delivered by the City of London Corporation alongside LACUNA, a leading cultural studio.

Stella Ioannou is the Director of Lacuna – a leading cultural studio and Artistic Director of Sculpture in the City. Stella launched Lacuna in 2011 to realise visionary public art projects and events. Her established relationships with London’s business and arts communities enrich her curatorial and leadership roles and contribute to Lacuna’s growing success. Prior to Lacuna, Stella was founding Deputy Director of the London Festival of Architecture (2003–2007) and Client Director for the international luxury events agency, Profirst (2007–2009).

Stella is Artistic Director of Sculpture in the City (since 2011), the UK’s largest annual urban sculpture park. She is former Culture Mile Outdoor Art Curator (2017–2019) and Creative Lead for Celebrate the City (2012), the Square Mile’s cultural programme for the London Olympics.

Stella is a Mayor of London and London Borough of Culture approved consultant, a trained architect and dancer, a liveryman member of the Worshipful Company of Chartered Architects and a member of the City Architecture Forum. Since 2017 Stella is also an advisor to the City of London’s Eastern City Cluster Area Strategy and in 2021 joined the Lord Mayor’s Culture and Commerce Task Force. Eastern City

We are the Eastern City BID, the Business Improvement District working to promote and enhance a unique part of the City of London, known as the Eastern City.

In February 2022, the Eastern City business community voted to establish a formal Business Improvement District (BID) in the area, after the success of its predecessor – the EC Partnership.

Business Partnerships and Business Improvement Districts give a voice to business communities – championing local priorities and ensuring the right people are at the decision table. Businesses understand that together they can be stronger; lobbying on big, strategic issues that impact on their commercial performance and ability to grow. This is not a case of the private sector plugging public sector funding gaps, but genuine collaboration and collective action.

Kate Hart is the CEO of the Eastern City Business Improvement District. Additionally, she is a member of Primera’s Senior Leadership team, leading on a range of communication issues and external affairs.

Kate started her career in Government communications, working on everything from the Elected Regional Assemblies campaign with John Prescott to operating in the press office ‘bunker’ in the aftermath of the 7/7 bombings, before leading on some of the UK’s most iconic Destination Marketing and placemaking schemes.

Prior to joining Primera, Kate ran her own communications consultancy working on housing, regeneration and placemaking projects and worked for some of the UK’s leading PR agencies including London Communications Agency and Fishburn Hedges.

She had a lead role in the marketing and communications for the transformed St Pancras International, an account which she led for a number of years following the re-opening in 2007.

Her career started at the Department for Communities and Local Government (DCLG), advising the Deputy Prime Minister John Prescott, Nick Raynsford and latterly, the former Housing Minister Yvette Cooper on communication issues.

Claire Reindorp is an experienced charity leader, having worked for nearly 30 years in the third sector, grant-making foundations and not for profit consultancy businesses.
