MSCTY x Sculpture in the City: Silent Disco

MSCTY x Sculpture in the City: Silent Disco With DJ sets from MSCTY’s Founder, Nick Luscombe.

To kick off the 14th edition Sculpture in the City Activation Programme, join MSCTY’s Founder, Nick Luscombe, for an evening of immersing yourself in experiential sound at one of three silent disco sets in the courtyard of 100 Bishopsgate where artist Julian Opie’s ‘Charles. Jiwon. Nethaneel. Elena.’ sculptures can be seen as part of the 14th edition of SITC.

MSCTY x Sculpture in the City is a programme launched in 2018 that adds to the digital transformation of Sculpture in the City and enlivens 13 sites from Aldgate to Shoreditch and from Leadenhall Market to St. Botolph’s-without-Bishopsgate.

Thirteen commissioned audio tracks, ranging from modern classical and electronic to globally inspired soundscapes, include site-specific work by Mixmaster Morris, Sarathy Korwar, Midori Komachi, Bambooman and Angele David-Guillou.

In 2023 a new track launched for the 12th Edition of Sculpture in the City, Stepped Back at The Leadenhall Building.

MSCTY x Sculpture in the City allows visitors to experience architecture-inspired music and sound art in the very place that sparked its creation. These tracks are available 24/7 simply by using headphones and connecting a handheld device to the webapp.

About MSCTY:

Based on health, well-being, and the specific characteristics of locations, our Studio develops and applies sound + music that breathes life into diverse [online and offline] spaces. Founded by Nick Luscombe in 2010, we’ve produced 400+ projects; these are developed via application of sound through creative means and scientifically-developed solutions.

Our research collaborators include labs + units at the Bartlett School of Architecture, The University of Tokyo, and Okinawa Institute of Science and Technology.

Nick Luscombe is a British DJ, broadcaster, sound artist, field recordist and producer based in Tokyo. He is the founder and lead sound architect of MSCTY, established in 2010, which has so far produced over 400 soundtracks by a variety of international musicians and sound artists. Nick is also the co-founder of OIST Sonic Lab, at the Okinawa Institute of Science and Technology, and in his role as artistic director is researching the intersection of sound and well-being. As a radio DJ he is perhaps best known for his pioneering ambient and electronic music show Flomotion on London’s XFM between 2000-2007, BBC 6 Music 6 Mix 2002-2004, BBC Radio 3’s Late Junction from 2009-2019, and now New Ratio on Tokyo’s CIC Live and dublab.jp and ONEJAZZ in the UK. His field recording, soundscape and ambient music mixes have been featured on BBC 6 Music and BBC Radio 3, who also broadcasted his critically acclaimed Sounds of Japan and Sound Designs series. Last year Nick produced and presented radio documentaries about architect Kengo Kuma and musician Ryuichi Sakamoto.
