Glassed in Dreams at 100 Bishopsgate

Glassed in Dreams, a a new site-specific installation presented by Brookfield Properties and The Association of Women in the Arts (AWITA) reflecting their shared commitment to fostering support for and celebrating female creative talent. The commission has been made following a highly-contested open call for female artists and curators to respond to the space. The installation will feature five large glass sculptures created by artist Gabriele Beveridge and curated by Vassiliki Tzanakou.

Forty entries were received in a competition requesting responses inspired by George Oppen’s Of Being Numerous – a poem which explores the complexities of urban life and the delicate balance between individuality and collective identity.

A curated selection of four shortlisted competition entries are displayed in a second Brookfield Properties’ site: 30 Fenchurch Street: ‘Inside the Studio: How Artists Make Work’’

Beveridge’s sculptures integrate architecture, poetry, and materiality, using glass and metal to create a striking dialogue with the surrounding environment. Her artworks explore themes of existence, perception, and the relationship between individual and collective experiences. With the direction of Greek-British art historian and independent curator Vassiliki Tzanakou, the show aims to foster a dynamic interaction between the artworks on display and their surrounding environment, blurring the boundaries between interior and exterior within the glass-fronted atrium of 100 Bishopsgate.

The creative touchstone for the open call was drawn from George Oppen’s seminal poem ‘Of Being Numerous’, which reflects on urban life, individuality, and social existence. Through forty segments of reflective “civic poetry,” the poem explores the complexities of city living and the interplay between individual and collective identities. This exploration resonates strongly with contemporary urban workspaces, such as Brookfield Properties’ premier real estate properties, where both exhibitions will be held.

The collaboration showcases Brookfield Properties x AWITA joint commitment to support and increase visibility for female sculptors and curators through commissioning opportunities and exhibition platforms.

100 Bishopsgate is one of the many premier real estate properties developed and managed by Brookfield Properties in the City of London. By placing art within the lobby of shared-use workspaces, Brookfield Properties celebrates the office space as alternative galleries, giving workers and visitors a moment for looking and a reminder to pause – if only for a moment.

Glassed in Dreams (100 Bishopsgate) and Behind the Scenes: The Art of Site-Specific Commissions (30 Fenchurch Street) are free and open to the public Monday through Friday, 9 AM to 6 PM.
