Staying safe in the Eastern City

The Eastern City BID is committed to ensuring that everyone who lives, works, and spends time in the area feels safe and supported. Working closely with the City of London Police, St John Ambulance, and local charities, we fund and coordinate a range of initiatives that enhance wellbeing, deter crime, and provide immediate assistance when it’s needed most. From first aid on our streets to late-night welfare support and crime prevention schemes, these projects make a tangible difference to daily life in the City — creating a safer, more welcoming environment for all.

Cycle Medics

Our two cycle medics from St John Ambulance patrol alongside City of London Police cycle officers every Thursday night between 6pm-midnight (Thursday-Saturday in December). The service offers a reassuring presence which results in a swift response for unwell, injured or otherwise vulnerable members of the public and significantly eases pressure on the emergency services. Across their 21 shifts between April-October 2025 they have attended 59 incidents including road traffic collisions, accidental injuries, cardiac arrests and mental health crises. 23 ambulance call-outs have been prevented in the process at a saving of £10,810 to the NHS. From 27th November – 20th December they will be operating from 6pm-midnight Thursday to Saturday.

Phone Marking

In an effort to combat theft and in partnership with the City of London Police, we are running free mobile phone marking events across the Eastern City, both in public spaces and the lobbies of multi-tenanted buildings. A small, tamper resistant sticker placed on the back of the phone which is linked via QR code to your contact information, enabling the police to return a lost or stolen phone to the rightful owner if recovered. We have marked over 2,000 phones so far and it only takes a couple of minutes to do.

If you are a business and are interested in hosting a phone marking event or would like information on the next public phone marking session please email info@easterncity.co.uk

City Safe Bus

Stationed beside the taxi rank at Liverpool Street Station, this converted ambulance serves as a mobile welfare hub on Thursday, Friday and Saturday evenings, offering support to anyone in need. It is permanently staffed by City of London Police officers and a trained medic, with occasional volunteers from the likes of Samaritans and NHS mental health services. If you’re lost or can’t get home, require medical attention, are out of charge on your phone or simply need somebody to talk to then please do come to the City Safe Bus for help. The City Safe Bus is operating extended hours from 27 November to 20 December from 6pm – 3am.

Taxi Marshals

The marshals are present at the Liverpool Street taxi rank every Thursday, Friday and Saturday night between 9pm and 1am (9pm-2am in December). Their role is to manage the rank by preventing anti-social behaviour, providing help and reassurance to passengers, and preventing the use of unlicensed cabs. Since beginning in December 2023, they have facilitated over 30,000 journeys.

Bridge Watch

We provide funding to this suicide prevention charity whose volunteers patrol the City’s five bridges. They identify people at risk and using listening and intervention techniques provide support, reassurance and additional signposting to achieve the most appropriate possible ‘safe for now’ outcome. We are also working with them to provide basic suicide awareness and prevention training to our business community.
