King William Street Improvements Project Update
Following the progress made at the 10 King William Street development, the City of London Corporation will be returning to complete the improvements to King William Street, between Abchurch Lane and Nicholas Lane, from Wednesday 1st July 2026, with works scheduled to last approximately seven months.
There will be no changes to the current traffic management provisions on site so traffic will only be permitted to travel northbound on King William Street to enable a safe working area for the City’s contractors. However, whilst the southbound contraflow cycle lane will remain in place, it will need to be removed from mid-October onwards when the works move from one side of the road to the other as there will not be enough remaining carriageway space to accommodate it. From this point until the scheme completes, there will be a southbound cycle diversion in place that will be published on our website once finalised.
Future junction and road closures
As there was before, there will be a need for short duration full side road closures when working across junctions. While these closure durations are currently estimates, the intention is to reopen the junctions as quickly as possible. Currently the dates for these are:
Nicholas Lane (south) – 5th August to 2nd September;
Abchurch Lane (south) – 26th September to 24th November; and
Nicholas Lane (north) – 30th November to 18th December
The Corporation have also provisionally booked the final full closure of King William Street so that they can resurface the last remaining section of carriageway. This is due to take place from 7pm on Friday 22nd to 5am on Monday 25th January, with a back-up date of Friday 29th January to Monday 1st February. During this time, the road will be closed to all traffic along with the associated side roads at the junction of King William Street only.
As before, access into properties will be maintained as best as possible throughout the works, as well as an accessible route for people walking and wheeling along the street.
