Broadworks Impact Review Published: Pioneering New Insights into Cultural and Social Value in The City

Eastern City BID is proud to publish the Broadworks Impact Review, a landmark study evidencing the social, cultural and economic value generated by creative activation in the Square Mile.

Developed in collaboration with leading property developer Landsec and creative workspace operator Hive Curates, Broadworks transformed a vacant 5,426 sqft site on Old Broad Street into a thriving cultural and wellbeing hub. Over an initial 18 months the meanwhile project delivered powerful results:

  • 11,483 visitors welcomed
  • 355 creatives supported
  • 182 jobs created
  • £7.9 million in calculated social value
  • 96% studio occupancy
  • 90 public events hosted

The report offers insights into how grassroots creativity can reshape perceptions of The City, support wellbeing, and diversify place identity. From lunchtime dance workshops to after-work exhibitions, Broadworks creates a new kind of space — one that connects people to place and offers an inclusive cultural amenity in a predominantly commercial environment.

The review also aligns directly with the ambitions of the City of London Corporation’s Destination City strategy and its emerging Cultural Planning Framework, offering a replicable model for how underused spaces can be reimagined to deliver lasting public benefit.

Broadworks was recognised by the New London Architecture awards as a national exemplar in meanwhile activation, and its success has now led to a year-long extension.
